En provenance de l’Inde du Nord, la chanteuse Anjana Nath interprète des chants classiques de la tradition hindoustani accompagnée de Pankaj Mishra au sarangi (vièle à archet) et du joueur de tabla montréalais, Shawn Mativetsky. Un solo de danse kathak (qui signifie histoire, ou conte en sanscrit), sera exécuté par Sudeshna Maulik dont la collaboration dynamique avec Anjana Nath e…st à l’origine de MEHFIL. Réelle célébration de la beauté et la spiritualité de la musique et de la danse hindoustani, l’interaction intime entre les interprètes se déroule dans l’esprit de l’art indien séculaire où la danse (nritya), la percussion (vadya) et la musique vocale (geet), se réunissent dans une seule entité appelée Sangeet.

Anjana Nath va interpréter des chants du répertoire classique hindoustani dont font partie le Khayal, le Thumri, et le Raag-Pradhan bengali (ensemble de chansons populaires bengalies semi-classiques popularisées par Pt. Ajay Chakraborty), accompagnée par le joueur de sarangi Pankaj Mishra. La danse de Sudeshna Maulik, de style Kathak, s’articulera autour de Thumri, de Dadra et de Kajri Chaturanga du répertoire semi-classique, chantés par Mme Nath. Cette danse se basera sur des interprétations de la teneur poétique des compositions, ceci en explorant les éléments expressifs du Kathak reflétant le caractère unique de l’école de Lucknow (Lucknow gharana) et son concept du bhâv-Batana.

It is with great pleasure that we present Mehfil, a two-hour long Hindustani classical vocal and Kathak dance recital that features Indian classical vocal rendition by Anjana Nath of Kolkata, accompanied by Pankaj Mishra on sarangi, and a solo Kathak recital by Sudeshna Maulik with live accompaniment by the aforementioned guest artists and Montreal’s very own Shawn Mativetsky on tabla. Hailing from India, both Anjana Nath and Pankaj Mishra are extremely talented and highly acclaimed musicians. Mehfil is the outcome of a dynamic collaboration between Maulik and Nath, complemented beautifully by the musical expression of the sarangi and tabla. Mehfil will enchant the heart, by celebrating the beauty and the spirituality of Hindustani music and dance. The intimate interaction between the performers will uphold the traditional essence of the Indian art which considers dance (nritya), percussion (vadya), and vocal music (geet) as a unified identity – Sangeet.

Anjana Nath will sing Hindustani classical vocal comprised of Khayal, Thumri, and Bengali Raag-Pradhan (popular Bengali semi-classical songs popularized by Pt. Ajay Chakraborty), accompanied by sarangi player Pankaj Mishra. Sudeshna Maulik’s Kathak recital will revolve around Thumri, Dadra, and Kajri Chaturanga, from the semi-classical repertoire), sung by Ms. Nath. The Kathak performance will elaborate upon interpretations of the poetic content of the compositions, exploring the expressive elements in Kathak, and reflecting the unique character of Lucknow gharana Kathak and its concept of Bhav-Batana.

Friday, August 13 – Kathak Concert – Joanna de Souza and the Chhandam Dance Company with the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, and Rina Singha

4:00pm –  Kathak Gala  Fairview Library Theatre 35 Fairview Mall Drive, Toronto Ontario. Kathak Ensembles Tarana Dance Company, Nupoor Dance Creations, Nrityamela Children’s Dance Theatre, and other to be announced.

6:00pm – Kathak Concert with Hemant and Vaishali Panwar, Reshmi Chetram, Shanta Chikarmane, and Laura Otis. Rhythmic Finale featuring live music and dancers representing all participating groups, choreography by Dr. Maya Rao.
